MODERN MEDICINE
JOURNU
ABOUT JOURNU · PHILOSOPHY + EXPERTISE
We don't treat symptoms.
We investigate them.
Journu Modern Medicine is a functional health and hormone care practice for women and men who are done being told their labs are fine while their body tells a different story.
Our philosophy is simple: symptoms are not random. They are the body's attempt to communicate that something in its underlying environment has shifted. Our job is to find out what — and address it at the root, not the surface.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
Five principles that guide
every client we work with.
These are not marketing statements. They are the clinical beliefs that determine how we approach every case, every protocol, and every conversation with a client. They are also why our outcomes differ from what most practitioners deliver
01
Hormones don't work in isolation
Your hormones work inside a body — one with a metabolism, a stress response, an inflammatory load, and a cellular environment. When those systems are dysregulated, hormones don't signal correctly regardless of dose. We address the environment first
04
Labs tell part of the story
Standard reference ranges are calibrated to identify disease, not optimize function. A result within range can still represent significant functional deficiency. We read labs in context — alongside symptoms, history, and functional markers that conventional panels rarely include.
02
The body is protective, not broken
When the body produces symptoms, it is not malfunctioning. It is communicating. A body stuck in survival mode will slow digestion, deplete minerals, and disrupt hormone signaling as a protective measure. Healing requires understanding what the body is protecting against.
05
Support must be continuous
The body changes. Stress changes. Seasons change. A protocol written in January may need adjustment in April. Ongoing support — not quarterly check-ins — is what allows results to hold and build over time.
03
Common is not normal
PMS, period pain, perimenopausal fatigue, weight resistance, brain fog — these are common. They are not normal. They are signals. Accepting them as inevitable is the single biggest obstacle to resolving them.
WHAT MAKES JOURNU DIFFERENT
Metabolic restoration.
Not symptom management.
Most functional and conventional care addresses what the lab report shows. We address the body that produced it. The difference in outcomes is significant.
REDUCTIONIST CARE
Treat the number on the report
Low vitamin D → prescribe vitamin D supplement
Hormone imbalance → adjust the dose
Fatigue → run a thyroid panel, refer out
Weight gain → calories in, calories out
Anxiety → SSRI or birth control
Follow-up in 3–6 months
METABOLIC RESTORATION
Treat the number on the report
Low vitamin D → why isn't it converting? Gut? Liver? Inflammation?
Hormone imbalance → what's blocking clearance and receptor response?
Fatigue → nervous system, mineral status, circadian rhythm, cellular energy
Weight gain → insulin signaling, stress hormones, metabolic flexibility
Anxiety → progesterone, cortisol rhythm, nervous system regulation
Continuous support between visits — because your body doesn't pause
COMMON — BUT NOT NORMAL
Symptoms that have been
normalized. They shouldn't be.
These symptoms are widespread. They are discussed as inevitable parts of womanhood, aging, or hormonal transition. They are not. They are the body's signals that something in its underlying environment needs attention. Every one of them is addressable.
PMS — common, not normal
Headaches and migraines
Hair thinning or loss
Bloating or prolonged fullness after eating
Heavy or painful periods
Histamine reactions and food intolerances
Sudden or unexplained weight gain
Excessive mood swings or irritability
Dry skin, brittle nails
Irregular bowel movements
Irregular or absent periods
Fatigue that doesn't resolve with rest
Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
Low sex drive
Joint stiffness and inflammation
Acid reflux or GERD
Infertility or fertility challenges
Anxiety, panic, or wired-but-tired feeling
If you've been told these are "just part of getting older" or "normal for your age" — that is not a diagnosis. That is an absence of investigation. These symptoms have physiological drivers. Finding them is what we do.
HOW WE WORK
The systems we look at
in every case.
The body does not fail in a single system. It fails in patterns — across interconnected systems that conventional care evaluates separately. We look at all of them together, because that is how the body actually works.
01
Circadian rhythm + light biology
The timing of cortisol, thyroid, melatonin, leptin, and serotonin is governed by light signals. Disrupted circadian rhythm is the upstream cause of a significant number of hormone and metabolic complaints.
04
Liver + hormone clearance
Your liver is responsible for clearing used hormones from the body. When it is overburdened — by stress, poor nutrition, or alcohol — estrogen recirculates, symptoms compound, and no amount of dose adjustment resolves the pattern.
02
Nervous system regulation
A body in chronic stress prioritizes survival over healing. Digestion slows, minerals deplete, hormone signaling breaks. Nervous system safety is not optional — it is the prerequisite for everything else.
05
Mineral status + nutrition
Most women are not deficient in hormones. They are depleted in what allows the body to use them. Magnesium, zinc, copper, potassium — the cofactors that make every cellular process possible.
03
Cellular communication
Hormones are signals. Those signals only work if the receiving cell can interpret them. Cell membrane integrity — dependent on the right fats, phospholipids, and mineral balance — determines whether your protocol lands.
06
Hormone therapy — when indicated
BHRT is one of the most powerful tools available for metabolic restoration and healthy aging — when the systems underneath it are supported. We offer precision, physiologic dosing through our on-staff APRN.
HOW WE INVESTIGATE
Comprehensive testing.
Not just a standard panel.
Standard labs look for disease. Functional labs look for the patterns that precede it. We use both — because partial data produces partial answers.
INCLUDED IN BHRT + 1:1 PROGRAMS
Comprehensive Blood Panel
68+ biomarkers covering full thyroid panel, sex hormones, metabolic markers, inflammatory markers, nutrients, and iron. Run at enrollment and again at 4 months to track progress. Most standard panels run 20–30 markers.
INCLUDED IN 1:1 PROGRAM · AVAILABLE A LA CARTE
HTMA — Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis
Measures mineral balance, heavy metal exposure, stress patterns, and metabolic type. Reveals long-term tissue status that blood panels can't capture — especially adrenal function and cellular hormone response.
RECOMMENDED WHEN INDICATED
DUTCH — Dried Urine Hormone Panel
Tracks hormone production, metabolism, and clearance over 24 hours. Provides a complete picture of estrogen, progesterone, androgens, and cortisol patterns — including how hormones are being metabolized and detoxified.
RECOMMENDED WHEN INDICATED
GI-MAP — Stool Testing
Identifies pathogens, gut inflammation, microbiome imbalances, and digestive function markers. Essential when gut health is driving hormone and metabolic symptoms — which is more common than most practitioners recognize.
